How To Control Light From your Baltimore Windows

April 02, 2018

There are a lot of reasons you’d want to block light from coming through windows in Baltimore. Say it’s from ambient street light, constant traffic going by, or ordinary sunlight, blocking the light from your windows is important for a good night’s sleep.

For those in dire need of better sleep, here are a few ways Baltimore homeowners can best black out their windows.

Which Window Coverings Control Light The Best?

Lots of Baltimore window treatments claim to darken a room for better sleep, and you can pretty easily divide them into three categories: the good, the bad, and the ugly. Take a look.

Light Controlling Window Treatments – The Good

The best window treatments to block light from your windows should do these things:

  • Effectively prevent light from coming in.

  • Adjust easily depending on your preferences.

  • Look fantastic.

The window covering that best fits all these criteria is Baltimore plantation shutters. When the louvers are completely shut, shutters create a seal on your windows, letting almost no light in. Sunburst Polywood shutters also come with built-in weatherstripping that fills in the gaps along your window frame, making them even more effective. And unlike cheaper shutters, Polywood is guaranteed to warp or split, which can cause gaps in between the louvers and frame.

And unlike some bargain-bin DIY window blackout solutions, shutters look beautiful in your home. Rather than looking like a piece of hardware, they’re as good looking as they are functional.

A second option for the “good” category is light-blocking roller shades. These are made with thick and dense material to keep out most light, and extend to the edges of your window opening. There can be some miniscule spaces around the edges of the shade where light might seep inside. But for a window treatment that isn’t shutters, room darkening shades make for a good secondary choice.

Light Controlling Window Treatments – The Bad

In this category we have window coverings that don’t quite go the distance when it comes to blacking out a window. Any type of fabric window covering, from curtains to drapes, will allow some light in unless they’re both extremely dense and go beyond the perimeter of your window.

Even heavy-duty blinds don’t fare well, since the slats on blinds are always going to let slivers of light in. That means you’re going to get light, even if it’s at a very slight angle.

Light Controlling Window Treatments – The Ugly

Search for “Baltimore window blackouts” in Google and you’ll probably find some easy to use DIY sheets that you can hang up in your window frame to completely black it out. Most of them are customizable to your window size and shape, and adhere to the window frame with velcro or another adhesive. And for the most part, they do what they’re supposed to do.

But the real problems with those products are twofold. First off, they don’t exactly look good. Most of these products sacrifice fashion for function. So if you put in of these blackout sheets, be sure to do it in a spot that you don’t mind looking kind of drab.

Second, for being easy to DIY, you’d better hope that you don’t have to take them up and down often. The adhesive that keeps them adhered to the wall can wear off pretty quickly, meaning another purchase and another installation – both of which can grow old quick.
