Which Window Treatments Help With Privacy the Most?

April 30, 2018

Your house is your castle, and if you’re like most homeowners, finding Baltimore window treatments that give you privacy and sound blocking to maintain your sanctuary is a concern. Any window treatment is better than a naked window. However there are some window treatments that add more privacy than others, especially on specialty windows.

Providing Privacy on Windows That Are Hard to Cover

Most large, standard windows in your home are simple to cover with nearly any window treatment such as Baltimore shutters, shades, or blinds.

However, there are some situations when you need a special style of window treatment to achieve the level of privacy you need. These might be:

  • Bathroom windows where water and humidity might ruin fabric window treatments.

  • Sidelight windows that are tall and thin where window treatments can be jostled around by the door’s movement.

  • Irregular windows such as eyebrows, round windows, bay windows, etc., where normal rectangular blinds and curtains can’t cover your window without sacrificing the beauty of the window’s unique shape.

  • Large windows that can be difficult to reach like second-story foyer windows.

In these cases, you need window treatments that go above and beyond to add privacy to your space.

As a bonus, shop around for window treatments that can block sound to keep random noise outside and keep inside noise inside.

The Top Window Coverings for Privacy

The best window treatments for privacy that we recommend are Polywood® plantation shutters. Plantation shutters are able to be shut completely, for when complete privacy and light control is what you need. When you want to let light in and see outdoors, just tilt the louvers. For high windows, you should position the louvers at an angle to let light in while still protecting your privacy.

Indoor shutters are also perfect for specialty-shaped windows because they can be customized to fit any shape or size. And since Polywood shutters are waterproof, they’re perfect for bathrooms.

Another window treatment that helps with privacy is roller shades. Roller shades take up minimal space above the window, but are easy to pull down to prevent outsiders from seeing into your home. Though they can’t be custom-made to fit unique window shapes, you can find roller shapes in moisture-resistant material for areas such as the kitchen or bathroom.

Window Treatments that Don’t Make the Cut for Privacy

While any window treatment adds a minimum amount of privacy, there are two that perform poorer than others. The first is sheer curtains. Sheer curtains were popular years ago and can add an airy feeling to a room. However they’re fairly translucent and can be seen through fairly easily, particularly when it’s dark out.

Another product we don’t recommend for privacy are cheap or heavy blinds, which can snap and/or get stuck at an angle. If you can’t totally close the blinds because of breakage, then they’re not doing you any favors for privacy.
